Brown Bag Program

olderman.jpg    The Brown Bag Program, implemented in a majority of Golden Harvest Food Bank’s 30-county service area, furnishes bags or boxes of food averaging 20 pounds each to needy senior citizens. In order to qualify for the program, seniors must be at least 60 years of age, apply annually, verify their age and income, and be accepted according to USDA criteria for eligibility. Brown Bag food is picked up by seniors at convenient distribution sites or, if volunteers are available, delivered to their homes, depending on their mobility.

The Brown Bag Program:

  • Costs only $5 a month per senior household and furnish a month’s supply of supplemental groceries;
  • Provides a variety of groceries, allowing seniors the freedom to prepare several meals of their own choice;
  • Enables seniors living in poverty to be freed from having to make the difficult choice between food and medicine or other necessities;
  • Distributed 4,272 bags in FY2009 to seniors in our service area.
