Annual Food & Funds Drive Raises More Than $14,000 for CSRA

SRNS Check PresentationThe Savannah River Site (SRS) recently raised $14,400, and approximately 1,000 pounds of food, during its annual, fourweek food drive for the Golden Harvest Food Bank.  Several SRS organizations participated in this food drive—Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, Savannah River Remediation, the U.S. Forest Service-Savannah River, Wackenhut Services Savannah River and the U.S. Department of Energy.

The SRS food drive is one of Golden Harvest Food Bank’s largest local fund-raisers. According to Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC President and CEO Garry Flowers, the Site’s past food drives have collectively yielded more than $220,000 for Golden Harvest. “We’re proud to support organizations like Golden Harvest in their efforts to end hunger in the Central Savannah River Area. Unfortunately, hunger is more widespread in the CSRA than most people realize. As employees at SRS, we want to do our part to provide much needed relief to those in need,” Flowers said.

GHFB Executive Director Mike Firmin gratefully accepted the donations, stating, “We have had a large increase in family visits to our food pantries over the last few years. In particular, we’re seeing many more working families that need our help. SRS’ contributions greatly help us meet these needs. We appreciate the generosity of our friends

at SRS.” In addition to these donations, Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC (SRNS) made a corporate contribution of $15,000 to the Food Bank, providing an estimated 60,000 meals to those most in need.

“During an economic downturn as significant as the one we are living through, we know the holidays can be especially difficult for many families.  I hope our contribution will enable these families to have a brighter holiday season,” said Garry Flowers, SRNS President and CEO.

Michael Firmin, Golden Harvest’s Executive Director explains, “The Food Bank has been strained to the limits of its capacity by the increased orders for groceries flowing in from the hundreds of church food pantries and other charitable agencies." Firmin continued, “SRNS stepped into the breach just in time so that now, no needy family will have to skip the centerpiece of our beautiful American holiday tradition, the roast turkey. May God continue to bless the Company and all their wonderful employees during the Christmas season!”
